A cleaner way to hire Tauri developers

Krapton helps companies hire Tauri developers to build desktop apps that start quickly, install from small packages and keep sensitive logic in Rust rather than JavaScript. Tauri renders your HTML, CSS and TypeScript frontend in the...

  • Real Rust behind the UI

    Tauri commands run in Rust, so the developer needs real Rust skills: async commands on Tokio, managed state behind Mutex or RwLock, serde types shared with the frontend, and errors converted into serializable values instead of panics that crash the app.

  • Least-privilege by configuration

    In Tauri 2, plugin APIs stay blocked until a capability allows them. Developers write capability files that grant each window only the plugin permissions and commands it uses, scope file system access to specific directories, and keep a strict CSP so injected script cannot call privileged APIs.

  • Cross-webview testing habits

    Because each platform ships a different engine, developers test layouts and APIs on WebView2, WebKit and WebKitGTK, avoid Chromium-only features or add fallbacks, and check older macOS versions whose Safari engine lags behind current releases.

  • Small, signed, updatable builds

    Developers configure bundles for MSI or NSIS, DMG and AppImage, sign and notarize them in CI, and set up the updater plugin with its own signing key so clients verify every update before installing it.

Why Tauri?

What makes Tauri the right choice for modern engineering teams.

  • Security

    Tauri prioritizes security, offering a secure environment for building desktop applications with robust protection against common vulnerabilities.

What you can build with Tauri

  • Lightweight desktop utilities

    Menu-bar and system-tray apps, clipboard managers, screenshot tools and launchers where a small installer, low idle memory and fast startup matter more than pixel-identical rendering across platforms.

  • Local-first productivity apps

    Note-taking, document and project tools that keep data on the device in SQLite through the SQL plugin or rusqlite, encrypt it at rest, and sync to a server when the user chooses.

  • Desktop AI assistants

    Apps that run local models through a llama.cpp or Ollama sidecar, stream tokens to the UI over Tauri channels, and keep prompts and documents on the user’s machine for privacy-sensitive work.

  • Device and hardware tools

    Configuration and firmware-update utilities for USB or serial hardware, with the device protocol written in Rust using crates such as serialport, exposed to a web UI through narrowly scoped commands.

  • Secure client apps

    Wallets, password tools and admin consoles where secrets live in the OS keychain through the keyring crate, and cryptographic work such as key derivation and signing never touches JavaScript.

  • Mobile companion apps

    A mobile companion built from the same Tauri 2 project for iOS and Android, sharing the frontend and Rust core, with Swift or Kotlin plugin code where a native API is required.

Designing the Rust and webview boundary

The most important decision in a Tauri project is what lives in Rust and what stays in the webview. Krapton’s developers put anything that touches the file system, secrets, network calls with credentials, or heavy computation behind Rust commands, and keep the frontend responsible for presentation and user input. Commands accept small, validated payloads and return serializable results or typed errors, never raw panics. Long-running work reports progress through channels so the UI never polls. Each window gets a capability file listing exactly the commands and plugin permissions it calls, which means a cross-site scripting bug in a third-party frontend package cannot quietly read the disk. Because this boundary is explicit, it also documents the app’s security model for auditors and for the engineers who maintain the code after the hire ends.

The second half of the work is living with three different webviews. Before features are built, the developer agrees on a minimum supported version for each operating system, because WebView2 updates itself on Windows while WKWebView is tied to the installed macOS version and WebKitGTK to the Linux distribution. The frontend build targets that baseline, CSS and Web APIs are checked against it, and anything missing gets a fallback or moves to Rust. Linux needs particular care: packaging WebKitGTK dependencies for deb and rpm, and testing AppImage builds on more than one distribution. Release builds are tuned for size with LTO, a single codegen unit and stripped symbols, and the updater is tested from the previous version on every platform. The outcome is a small, quick app that behaves consistently, without the surprises that make teams retreat to Electron.

Tauri in action

const { app, mainWindow } = require('@tauri-apps/api/tauri');

        // Create your window
        app.on('tauri://created', () => {
          mainWindow.webContents.on('did-finish-load', () => {
            // You can execute JavaScript in your webview as follows
            mainWindow.webContents.executeJavaScript(
              const h1 = document.createElement('h1');
              h1.innerText = 'Hello Tauri!';
              document.body.appendChild(h1);
            );
          });
        });

What our Tauri developers go deep on

  • Commands, events and channels

    Async #[tauri::command] functions with typed arguments, events for broadcast updates, and channels for streaming progress or large ordered data, with TypeScript bindings generated through tauri-specta to keep both sides in sync.

  • Capabilities and security configuration

    Per-window capability files, scoped file system and shell permissions, a strict Content Security Policy in tauri.conf.json, the isolation pattern where frontend dependencies are untrusted, and review of every custom command as an attack surface.

  • Plugins and native code

    Official plugins for file system, dialogs, notifications, updater, store and SQL, plus custom plugins in Rust, with Swift and Kotlin code for mobile features that have no cross-platform equivalent.

  • Testing across webviews

    Rust unit tests for command logic, Tauri’s mock runtime for integration tests, Vitest for the frontend, and WebDriver tests through tauri-driver on Windows and Linux, since macOS lacks a WKWebView driver.

  • Build, signing and distribution

    tauri-action in GitHub Actions for multi-platform builds, Windows code signing, Apple notarization with an App Store Connect API key, updater artifacts signed with the key from tauri signer, and stable update endpoints.

  • State, concurrency and performance

    Managed state shared safely across async commands, heavy work moved off the main thread with spawn_blocking, release profiles tuned for size with LTO and strip, and webview memory checked per platform.

Common Tauri projects we deliver

  • Moving an Electron app to Tauri

    The frontend usually ports with few changes; the work is rewriting Node.js main-process code as Rust commands or sidecars, replacing ipcRenderer calls with invoke, defining capabilities, and fixing CSS that relied on Chromium-specific behavior.

  • Upgrading from Tauri 1 to Tauri 2

    The migration replaces the allowlist with capabilities, moves core APIs into plugins, updates JavaScript imports to the new packages, and reworks updater configuration; the official migration tool handles part of it, and developers finish the rest by hand.

  • Giving a CLI tool a desktop UI

    An existing command-line program or Python service ships as a Tauri sidecar binary, started and supervised by the Rust side, with progress streamed to the UI and the shell plugin scoped to that one executable.

  • Building an offline field app with sync

    Inspectors or technicians capture data offline into SQLite, attach photos from the file system within scoped directories, and sync through a background Rust task that retries with backoff when connectivity returns.

Tauri solutions by industry

  • Developer tools

    Database clients, API testers and Git utilities whose users notice memory use and startup time, and appreciate a native-feeling app that stays light in the background.

  • Crypto and finance

    Wallets and trading clients that keep keys and signing in Rust, restrict the frontend through capabilities, and verify every update signature before installing.

  • Field services

    Offline-capable apps for inspections, maintenance and surveys that run on modest laptops and tablets, where small installers and low memory use help.

  • Privacy-focused AI

    Local LLM and transcription apps for legal, medical or research users who cannot send documents to a cloud API, with inference running beside the app.

Tauri vs Electron

Tauri and Electron both turn a web frontend into a desktop app, but they make opposite bets. Electron ships its own Chromium and Node.js, trading size for consistency. Tauri uses the system webview and a Rust core, producing much smaller installers and lower memory use, but rendering can vary by platform and backend work requires Rust. Electron’s ecosystem is older and larger.

Hiring Tauri developers — answered

Practical answers to the questions CTOs and founders ask us most often before they hire.

How quickly can I hire a Tauri developer from Krapton?

Within 24 hours of the initial call. We keep a bench of pre-vetted Tauri engineers, so once you confirm the brief we line up two or three shortlisted CVs within a business day and can onboard the selected developer within two.

How much does it cost to hire a dedicated Tauri developer from India?

Blended hourly rates for senior Tauri engineers typically fall in the $18–$35 USD range depending on seniority and engagement length. Dedicated developers are billed monthly with no lock-in.

Are your Tauri developers full-time employees or freelancers?

Every Tauri developer you hire through Krapton is a full-time, in-house engineer — we never subcontract to freelancers or agencies. That means consistent code quality, signed NDAs, and a single point of accountability for your project.

Who owns the code and IP my Tauri developers write?

You do — 100%. IP assignment and confidentiality are covered by the contract and a free NDA on request. All code lives in your repositories, on your infrastructure, under your accounts from day one.

Do I need Rust experience when I hire Tauri developers?

Yes, at least one developer on the project should be comfortable with Rust. Simple apps can rely mostly on official plugins and JavaScript, but anything custom, such as background tasks, device access, encryption or performance-sensitive processing, is written as Rust commands or plugins. A Tauri developer should understand ownership, async Rust, serde and error handling well enough to keep that layer safe and maintainable.

When is Electron a better choice than Tauri?

Electron is the better choice when pixel-identical rendering across platforms matters, when your app depends on Chromium-only APIs or many Node.js packages, or when your team has no Rust capacity. Large, complex apps with heavy web features also benefit from Electron’s longer track record. Tauri wins when installer size, memory use, startup time and a tighter permission model are the priorities.

How hard is it to migrate from Tauri 1 to Tauri 2?

It is a moderate, mostly mechanical upgrade for typical apps. The tauri migrate command converts configuration and the old allowlist into capabilities, but developers still need to replace core API imports with plugin packages, review generated permissions so they are not broader than needed, update the updater setup, and retest every platform. Apps with custom plugins need more work because the plugin API changed.

How secure is a Tauri app by default?

Tauri gives you a strong starting point, but security still depends on configuration and command design. Plugin APIs require explicit permissions, the frontend cannot reach the operating system directly, and Rust largely prevents memory-safety bugs in the backend. Weak spots appear when capabilities are too broad, file scopes include the whole home directory, the CSP is relaxed, or a custom command trusts frontend input without validation.

Can a Tauri app also run on iOS and Android?

Yes, since Tauri 2 the same project can target iOS and Android, though mobile support is younger than desktop. The frontend and Rust core are shared, while features like push notifications, biometrics or in-app purchases may need plugins with Swift or Kotlin code. Expect to design mobile layouts separately and test on real devices, because mobile webviews and lifecycle events differ from desktop.
