PHP development company

Krapton takes on PHP applications of every age, from untyped PHP 5-era code with no tests to modern Laravel and Symfony services, and moves them to supported PHP 8 releases with static analysis, automated refactoring and measured performance.

Modern PHP is not the PHP you inherited

Krapton is a PHP development company for businesses whose revenue runs through PHP code, whether that is a custom platform written a decade ago, a Laravel or Symfony product, or a heavily customized WooCommerce or Magento store. Modern PHP has strict types, enums, readonly properties, attributes, a JIT compiler and mature tooling, yet many production systems still run on branches that no longer receive security fixes. Our PHP development services close that gap without a risky rewrite. PHPStan or Psalm establishes a baseline of known issues, Rector applies version upgrades and refactors mechanically, and PHPUnit or Pest characterization tests pin current behavior before anything changes. Composer dependencies are audited, and abandoned packages replaced. On the runtime side, we tune OPcache and PHP-FPM pools, add Redis caching and queues for slow work, and consider FrankenPHP or RoadRunner worker modes only where the request profile justifies keeping the application in memory.

PHP development services

  • PHP 8 version upgrades

Upgrades from PHP 7.x or older 8.x branches to a supported PHP 8 release, using Rector rule sets, PHPCompatibility checks and a staging run on production-like data before cutover.

  • Legacy code rescue

Untested PHP applications get characterization tests, a static-analysis baseline, removal of mysql_* calls and dynamic property use, and gradual extraction of business logic out of templates.

  • Laravel and Symfony builds

New web applications and APIs on the framework that suits the project: Laravel for fast product iteration with Eloquent and queues, Symfony for long-lived systems that value explicit configuration and Doctrine.

  • REST and GraphQL APIs

Versioned PHP APIs built with API Platform or Laravel resources, documented in OpenAPI, secured with OAuth or signed tokens, rate limited, and covered by contract tests so partner clients keep working.

  • Performance and scaling

Profiling with Blackfire or Tideways, query fixes found through slow logs, OPcache and PHP-FPM pool tuning, Redis caching, and heavy work moved into queue workers.

  • Security hardening

Prepared statements everywhere, password_hash with Argon2id, CSRF and session hardening, safe file uploads, no unserialize on user input, and composer audit running in CI.

Why teams choose Krapton for PHP

Senior engineers, fixed scope, and code you own — the things agencies promise and rarely deliver.

  • Rewrites only when justified

A working PHP system holds years of business rules; we refactor in place behind tests by default and recommend a rewrite only when the code cannot be made testable.

  • Static analysis as a gate

PHPStan or Psalm runs on every pull request with a committed baseline, so new code meets a strict level while legacy issues are paid down deliberately.

  • Framework-neutral PHP engineers

Our engineers work in Laravel, Symfony, WordPress, Magento and plain PHP, so the advice you receive fits your codebase rather than somebody’s favorite framework.

  • Decisions shaped by hosting

Shared hosting, managed platforms, containers and Kubernetes each constrain PHP differently; extensions, worker processes and cron jobs are planned for the environment you actually run.

How a PHP project runs with Krapton

  1. 01

    Codebase assessment

We record the PHP version, framework, extensions, Composer dependency health, test coverage and hosting setup, then rank the risks by business impact.

  2. 02

    Safety net first

Characterization tests around critical flows such as checkout, billing and login are written before refactoring begins, together with a static-analysis baseline.

  3. 03

    Incremental changes

Upgrades and refactors land in small pull requests, each deployable on its own, with every Rector diff read by a human before merging.

  4. 04

    Cutover and monitoring

Releases go out with error tracking, slow-query logging and rollback steps prepared, and production behavior is watched closely after every version change.

PHP development: questions answered

How does a PHP development company handle an old codebase?

It makes the code safe to change before changing it. A PHP development company should first add tests around the flows that earn money, run static analysis to map the risk, and audit Composer dependencies. Version upgrades and refactoring follow in small steps that can be deployed and rolled back independently. Rewriting from scratch is the exception, chosen only when the existing code cannot be tested.

Is PHP still a good choice for a new project?

Yes, for most web applications and APIs. Modern PHP with Laravel or Symfony is typed, fast enough for typical web workloads, simple to host and backed by a deep package ecosystem on Packagist. It is a weaker fit for CPU-heavy data science, where Python dominates, and for systems built around long-lived connections, although Laravel Reverb, Swoole and FrankenPHP have narrowed that gap considerably.

How risky is upgrading from PHP 7 to PHP 8?

It is manageable when done in stages with tests. The breaking changes are well documented: saner comparisons between strings and numbers, removed functions such as each(), consistent TypeErrors from internal functions, and dynamic properties deprecated in PHP 8.2. Rector automates much of the work, PHPCompatibility flags the rest, and running the suite on both versions in CI catches what remains before production switches.

Should we choose Laravel or Symfony?

Choose Laravel when fast product iteration and a batteries-included toolkit matter most, and Symfony when the system will live for many years, integrate with many others and benefit from explicit configuration. Both are mature and actively maintained. Eloquent is quicker to start with, while Doctrine suits complex domain models. A team already fluent in one framework should usually stay with it.

What decides the cost of a PHP project?

Scope and the condition of the existing code decide it more than anything else. Other drivers are the number of integrations, how much legacy code lacks tests, data migration between schemas, hosting changes, compliance needs such as PCI DSS for payment flows, and the seniority mix the work requires. A codebase assessment comes first, so any estimate reflects what is actually there.
